Who needs a Juruh Parkir for parking?
Yesterday I landed on a strip with 12 parking spaces next to a supermarket. There was space for motorbikes too.
And then you also had Mr. Fani and Mr. Ricky.
In their slippers they run and gesture and make sure everyone parks safely.
Six days a week. They work in shifts and belong to a group of twelve Jukirs.
How much do you earn?
Well, you know, money is not the only thing. Freedom. Flexibility. Also important.
So, how much do you earn?
Hard to say. You get your money daily. And before you know it, it’s gone. The whole family has to live from it.
It is enough not to die. But not enough to save a bit.
People in the city told me Jukirs earn a lot.
Haha, they should try it themselves.
You need connections. Permission from important people. Someone from the municipality. The boss of the ‘preman’ who will keep you safe. The head of the neighborhood. The owner of the land. Everyone has to earn something.
Then how much do you earn in a month?
How should you count? Per day it is around 50.000 rupiah. Often it is less. And sometimes more. Like during Lebaran, there was one day we got 100K.
So per month? Less than 1.5 million, I think.
We also have side jobs.
We collect the waste from the neighborhood. And we make it disappear.
Disappear?
Don’t ask. The municipality stopped collecting it. So we organise it ourselves. You can’t just let it rot and spread diseases.
And we collect the used cardboard from the supermarket and sell it for reuse.
So, how much do you earn in total?
Maybe 2 million a month. I think less.
Our wives work too.
One is a seamstress at home. One sells street food.
Is it enough?
Of course it is enough. They laugh.
There is always a way. You need to be grateful. You need to be happy.
